The Statistics of fashion

1/13/24

By: Preeti Vadlamani

During the early 1900s the average family in America would spend 14% of their income on clothes. Now the average woman is said to have owned at least 103 pieces of clothing. This huge change is due to fast fashion. From the 1990s to the 2000s we see a huge change, people are now moving from handmade clothing to lower costing fabrics, and people are spending more on clothes. As prices were dropping, many people continued to purchase more clothing. Now the business model in fast fashion is to flood stores with new merchandise in many different colors, convincing people to buy them in many different colors. The rise in social media has also affected the huge consumption of fast fashion. However this is leading to many landfills, and microplastics are now affecting our health by entering the water that we drink.
